Information
Lotus FM is a national public-service radio station based at the SABC in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, broadcasting on 87.7–106.8 FM across South Africa. Owned by the SABC, it has been on air since 8 January 1983. It is a full-spectrum service aimed mainly at South African Indians. English is the main broadcast language, with specialist programmes in Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati and Telugu.
The weekday schedule moves between music, conversation and culture. O’Neil Nair leads Breakfast Xpress from 06:00 to 09:00. The show is fast-paced and built around current content and audience participation. Nair’s “Keep the Passion” motto is well matched to his long-running role at the station. Varshan Sookhun takes The Lunch Break into entertainment, arts and community stories. The Drive By with Neelofar Sayed adds traffic, sport and listener interaction.
Music is where Lotus FM becomes more specialised. Bollywood has a regular place through Bollywood Billboard, while other programmes cover ghazals, Tamil and Telugu music and other Indian musical traditions. The station also includes Western music. There is no public rotation report that can reliably show which artists are played most often, so a ranking of the most-played names would be guesswork.
The audience is not defined only by music taste. Lotus FM serves Indian South Africans across different languages and religious backgrounds. SABC’s 2024–2025 rate card reports 237,000 listeners aged 15+, based on BRC RAMS Amplify data. The station’s value lies in combining general radio content with programming that gives space to Indian language, culture and religion.
The awards record is also part of the station’s recent profile. In 2025, Lotus FM won six Telkom SA Radio Awards, including Breakfast Show and Breakfast Show Presenter for O’Neil Nair. Earlier awards include Nair’s 2019 Liberty Radio Award and recognition for Breakfast Express.
Compared with mainstream stations such as East Coast Radio, Lotus FM has a narrower cultural focus but offers much more dedicated Indian-language and cultural programming. That focus is useful for its core audience, although listeners looking for a general-market playlist have more options elsewhere.
